The former Conservatoire of Lausanne commenced its teaching operations over 150 years ago, but from 2011 the name 'Conservatoire de Lausanne' refers only to a pre-professional program which offers music tuition to children and interested adults and leads to the award of a Certificat d'études non-professionnelles. The professional program is now offered by the Haute École de Musique (HEMU) which presents a full university-level program of classical or jazz music, with departments of opera and drama. Since 2009 the HEMU has also been a part of the Music and Performing Arts faculty at the University of Applied Sciences and Arts of Western Switzerland. There are two campuses in Lausanne and others in Fribourg and Sion. There are part-time courses in the Willems approach to music education. Language of instruction is French. An active member of the Association Européenne des Conservatoires, Académies de Musique et Musikhochschulen.
