Courses in international music performance and dance offered by experts in their particular world music field, and generally organised on a weekly basis.


Institution Notes:

This not-for-profit institution was founded in 1983 and has no affiliations with any university or conservatorium. It aims to promote the diversity of musical cultures by holding courses of music and dance from countries throughout the world and acts as a clearing house for information of other similar programs. It issues publications on traditional music and dance and holds a significant collection of recordings and photographs of traditional musics and costumes. Current and recent courses include Anatolian folk music, Kurdish Iranian percussion, Carnatic signing, Iranian setar, violin and guitar, Central European gypsy jazz, samba percussion, choral music from the Balkans, taiko Japanese drums, mridangam percussion of South India, Galician bagpipes, Hindustani music, samba batucada (Afro-Brazilian percussion), the tammorra and tamburello (Southern Italy), Irish, French and cajun violins, Tyrolean yodel, flamenco guitar, Arabic lute (oud), Hindustani vocal music, Arabic darbuka, bender, riqq and daf, Oriental music, traditional Persian song, steel pan, Afro-Cuban songs, mandingo kora, African djembes and doundoumbas, Andean flutes and wind instruments, Spanish-American guitar, Afro-Cuban percussion, Japanese shakuhachi, Irish fiddle, tin whistle and Irish flute.
