Institution Notes:
In October 1999 the University of the Arts (Hochschule der Kunste Bern) was formed from an amalgamation of several former institutions. There are three departments: College of Music (Hochschule für Musik), College of Theatre (Hochschule für Theater), and Music School (Musikschule). The former Swiss Jazz School is now the Department of Jazz of the Hochschule für Musik Bern. Founded in 1967, it is the oldest jazz school in Europe and trains the top young Swiss jazz musicians. The College of Music holds a large collection of instruments. Languages of instruction are German and French, though English may be used at times. An active member of the Association Européenne des Conservatoires, Académies de Musique et Musikhochschulen.
