The University of Applied Sciences and Arts of Northwestern Switzerland (Fachhochschule Nordwestschweiz FHNW) was established in 2006 from a merger of nine former schools and operates on four main campuses in northwestern Switzerland. The music programs are offered at the Academy of Music which houses three institutes - the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis (founded in 1933 and specialising in early music), the Academy Klassik (emphasizing Western classical styles), both of these at the Basel campus, and Academy Jazz (which operates from its own 'Jazzcampus' in Kleinbasel). Facilities include state-of-the-art electronic studios and recording facilities as well as a collection of historical instruments. There is an attached General School of Music that offers instruction to young children and interested adults. Language of instruction is German. An active member of the Association Européenne des Conservatoires, Académies de Musique et Musikhochschulen.
