Diploma. Five years. Programs in performance (Western, Arabic - including pipe organ, Arabic voice, bazouki, oud, bozoq, Arabic percussion, kanoon, nai), conducting, theory (Western and Arabic), harmony, counterpoint, aural training, orchestration, music history (Western and Arabic), analysis, art history, aesthetics, music technology. Piano is a required study for all students.


Institution Notes:

The High Institute of Dramatic Arts was founded in 1990 by the Iraqi-born composer Solhi al-Wadi who had founded the Arab Institute of Music in 1972 to provide music programs to children and young people up to the end of secondary school. Emphasis in the professional Diploma program at the High Institute of Music and Theatre is on performance on both traditional Arabic instruments and Western instruments. Ensembles include string ensemble, wind group, Arabic choir, Arabic orchestra, symphony orchestra, various choral groups and an active opera program. Due to the current situation in Syria there is no information on whether this program is still in operation.
