Country Notes:

MUSIC FOR SCHOOL-AGE CHILDREN. Young children may take initial music lessons from private teachers, or may enrol in group classes run by private organisations. At around eight years of age children may enter the music 'experimental' program in local schools provided they satisfactorily pass a simple performing audition and tests of basic theory, aural perception and solfège. In this program they receive individual instrumental lessons, classes in theory and solfège and participate in instrumental ensemble taught by part-time music specialists engaged for this purpose. PROFESSIONAL MUSIC TRAINING. In Taiwan students may enter professional music training programs either • after completion of Junior High School (nine years of formal schooling), to commence a five-year program leading to a Diploma of Music, or • after completion of Senior High School (twelve years of formal schooling), to commence a three- or four-year program leading to a diploma or a degree in music. Entry to university programs is dependent upon the passing of a national entrance examination following the completion of the secondary school certificate. Students wishing to enter music courses must also pass tests in performance, basic theory and solfège. Students wishing to train for teaching music in secondary schools usually attend a normal university. A number of former teachers’ colleges have extensive programs in music. These cater for students wishing to specialise in teaching music in elementary schools. Further information on tertiary music departments in Taiwan is available on www.ntnu.edu.tw/mus/index.html
