MUSIC IN SCHOOLS. Music is a required subject for the first nine years of schooling in Thailand, with instruction in Thai traditional music, mainly in the form of singing of traditional songs, playing of easy instruments (percussion, folk instruments, Thai flute) and including Thai classical and folk dance, as well as in Western music. From year nine onward music is an elective subject, with studies ranging through Thai and Western music appreciation, Thai and Western ensembles, instrumental classes and sometimes folk and classical dance classes. Some private music schools provide classes for very young children, and may offer programs in any of Yamaha, Orff and/or Kodály approaches. Some private music schools also provide for students wishing to study Western instruments and music theory. UNIVERSITY MUSIC PROGRAMS. Music programs at universities offer a mix of Thai classical music and Western or east- or southeast-Asian musics. Programs of training for primary school teachers include some study of Thai classical music and traditional song repertoire. THE RAJABHAT INSTITUTES. The Rajabhat Institute is the main degree-granting institute for education and vocational studies in Thailand. It operates under the Ministry of Education. There are many campuses of the Institute throughout Thailand, all of them being former teachers’ colleges. They offer the degree of Bachelor of Education, regarded as equivalent to a university degree. Twenty eight of these campuses offer a Bachelor of Education with a major (or minor) in music, with specialisation in either Western or Thai music. In provincial areas the Institutes offer studies in music of the local area. Office of the Rajabhat Institutes Council: Tel +66 2 628 5281-90 Fax +66 2 281 7815.
