Institution Notes:
The Centre of Arab and Mediterranean Music was founded in 1991 and operates under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Leisure. The Centre acts as a facilitator of musical and cultural exchange between Europe and the Arab world. While not a teaching institution, it is the home of the Tunisian National Sound Archive of over 10,000 items, and has an extensive library of documents and a museum of musical instruments. It organises master classes and undertakes musicological research on aspects of Tunisian music, with field trips to collect examples from regional areas. It also mounts exhibitions and public concerts and produces recordings of traditional music played on traditional instruments. A data base has been established. The Centre houses a stringed instrument workshop that teaches skills for the making and restoration of instruments.
