The Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University was founded in 1883, and the State Conservatory of Music (established in 1970) was incorporated into its structure in 1982. There are departments of music (performance, composition, conducting), musicology (including ethnomusicology, folklore), and performing arts (theatre, opera, ballet, modern dance). Feldenkreis awareness and eurhythmics are available for students. There is an attached secondary school for training talented school-age children. Language of instruction is Turkish. An active member of the Association Européenne des Conservatoires, Académies de Musique et Musikhochschulen.
