Institution Notes:

Founded in 1453, the Istanbul University gained its current name and status in 1924. The Conservatory was established in 1914 and was the first in Turkey. It was later expanded to include departments of theatre and ballet as well as music and opera, gaining its current name in 1986. There is a well-equipped library of scores and a unique collection of manuscripts of traditional Turkish music. Language of instruction is Turkish. There are attached primary and secondary schools offering music instruction to students. Performance tuition is also offered to interested members of the local community. Adult part-time programs are available in Turkish classical instruments and voice as well as in musical theatre. An active member of the Association Européenne des Conservatoires, Académies de Musique et Musikhochschulen.
