Istanbul Technical University can trace its history back to 1773. The Turkish Music State Conservatory was established in 1976. It has departments of Turkish music performance, composition, musicology, theory, music technology and Turkish folk dance. Apart from the professional program the music school also teaches the making of Turkish and Western instruments. The library holds a collection of manuscripts and recordings of Turkish classical music, and there is a small collection of Turkish instruments. An attached kinder school (years 5 to 7) offers music sessions to young children; older children and interested adults may also take lessons. An attached secondary school offers special music tuition to talented children from year 9. Language of instruction is Turkish. An active member of the Association Européenne des Conservatoires, Académies de Musique et Musikhochschulen.
