Institution Notes:
The University can trace its history back to 1958 and gained its current name and status in 1967. The Conservatory is the first of its kind in Turkey, being established in 1936 and becoming affiliated with the university in 1982. Its Western music education program was organised in collaboration with Paul Hindemith. There are departments of performance arts (opera, drama, dance), music (performance, composition, choral and orchestral conducting) and musicology (including ethnomusicology and folklore). Facilities include two performance theatres, four ballet studios, an opera theatre and 200 practice rooms. An instrument construction and repair workshop operates on campus. There are primary and secondary school programs for gifted children. Language of instruction is Turkish. An active member of the Association Européenne des Conservatoires, Académies de Musique et Musikhochschulen.
