Institution Notes:

Queen's University was founded by Queen Victoria in 1845 and was designed as a non-denominational alternative to Trinity College Dublin which was controlled by the Anglican Church. The School of Music has particular strengths in renaissance music, composition, electro-acoustic music, computer applications and eighteenth, nineteenth and twentieth century music. The School of Anthropological Studies offers courses in ethnomusicology with studies in several areas (Africa, Asia, the Americas, Europe, Ireland). It has a collection of ethnic instruments as well as recordings of traditional music. The library holds the Bunting manuscripts of Irish folk melodies and the Hamilton Harty library. A new Sonic Arts Research Centre (SARC) is concerned with audio and music technology and is equipped with state-of-the-art studios. The music school organises the Sonorities Festival of Contemporary Music. Stranmillis University College became a recognised College of the University in 1968, and was officially given that title in 1999. St Mary's University College was founded in 1900 and in 1999 was designated as a College of Queen’s University Belfast.
