The University was founded in the early 1960s. It participates in the ERASMUS scheme in which students may spend part of their time at a partner European university, counting the study abroad as part of the degree at York. The Music Department is centred on the Lyons Concert Hall and runs an acclaimed public concert series. Particular interests in the music department are non-Western music, twentieth century music, composition and music in the community. There is a significant collection of early instruments as well as of orchestral instruments, including percussion. Facilities include some fine performing spaces and well-equipped electronic studios. A Music Research Centre supports creative research into the use and application of technology in music.
