The College was established in 1950 with the help and encouragement of Poet Laureate John Masefield, Lawrence Olivier and Peggy Ashcroft who formed part of the Board of Governors. Currently it trains actors, musicians, directors, designers and technicians. A number of productions are staged each year as well as TV and radio projects and workshops and audition techniques. The College’s specialist library holds over 35,000 books on the Performing Arts and related subjects, with a large periodicals collection, sound and video recordings, CD-ROMs and internet access. There is a recording studio and a MIDI suite. The College organises workshops for young people aged between 8 and 17 with an interest in theatre and back-stage work. There is an international summer school for actors. All courses are validated by the University of Manchester.
