Institution Notes:
This is the oldest university in the English-speaking world, with nine centuries of continuous existence since 1096. Oxford University is a collegiate university, with 39 self-governing colleges related to the University in a type of federal system. The Faculty of Music houses the Bate Collection of Historical Instruments, a Javanese gamelan and a workshop for the repair and restoration of instruments. It is also the administrative centre for the Royal Musical Association which holds meetings for the presentation of musicological papers and publishes journals. The Faculty library holds an extensive collection of books, scores, periodicals, recordings and a significant number of rare scholarly publications. In addition, students have access to the University’s 400-year-old Bodleian Library with its vast musical holdings ranging from medieval chant manuscripts through Elizabethan madrigals and first editions of Beethoven to the sheet music of the latest bands. There is a well-equipped recording and electro-acoustic composition studio. The Faculty hosts an annual conference of the Russian and East European Music study group. The university’s Department for Continuing Education holds various short courses in music for interested adults.
