Institution Notes:

The Open University offers part-time undergraduate and post-graduate university education to home-based students, using distance teaching methods (print, audio-visual media), together with some regionally organized face-to-face tuition and summer schools. The undergraduate degree is modular, with students putting together six credits for an ordinary degree and eight credits for an honours degree. Music is taught as part of interdisciplinary courses but has some of its own specialist courses. The music department sees its main strengths as in Western music (Renaissance to the present day), African music and jazz, music editing techniques and the history of musical instruments. There is a collaborative agreement for credit between the Open University and the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music (ABRSM). Short continuing education courses are available as single subjects to non-undergraduates. In-service and up-dating courses are available for music teachers through the University’s School of Education.
