Institution Notes:

The University of Manchester can trace its history back to 1824. It was formed in 2004 with the merger of the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology and the Victoria University of Manchester. Music programs are taken at the Martin Harris Centre for Music and Drama which houses state-of-the-art equipment and resources, including the Cosmo Rodewald Concert Hall, the John Thaw Studio Theatre, the Lenagan Library and the John Casken Lecture Theatre, together with rehearsal and practice spaces. The NOVARS Research Centre houses new electroacoustic composition studios. The Department has particular strengths in twentieth century music and composition, medieval and classical music. There is a collection of instruments including a set of reproduction baroque instruments and other early instruments. The Department's contemporary ensemble-in-residence is Psappha and the University's quartet-in-residence is the Quatuor Danel. The university’s Centre for Development of Continuing Education holds a variety of short courses in music for interested adults.
