The Music Department is located at Southlands College where facilities include a concert hall, a keyboard laboratory, electronic studios, practice rooms and a Harrison organ. There are instruments for early music and rock and ethnic music as well as a set of classical Indian instruments, a West African ‘drum gahu’ ensemble, a Zimbabwean mbira, a Javanese gamelan and a set of steel pans. The University has an Applied Music Research Centre, an interdisciplinary centre with expertise and interest in music, psychology, education, therapy, cultural studies and the application of this expertise to community and practical issues.
