Institution Notes:

The University was founded in 1925 as a memorial to the Newfoundlanders who had lost their lives on active service during the First World War. The School of Music has access to several fine performance spaces. There is a Folklore Department which offers courses in local performance traditions (accordion, fiddle, Newfoundland song) and an active opera program. Research Centres include Centre for the Study of Music, Media and Place, the Bruneau Centre for Excellence in Choral Music, and the International Institute for Critical Studies in Improvisation. Facilities include a Sundanese gamelan. Member of the University of the Arctic.
