A system of graded public examinations in instrumental and vocal performance, speech and drama. There are also rock school examinations in guitar, bass, drums, vocals, piano, band-based keyboard, and drum kit and percussion. Certificate examinations are fully performance-orientated, with no supporting tests or technical work. Diploma examinations are held in Western classical styles, contemporary, jazz and popular styles, theory and composition.
Trinity College London is not a teaching body. Since 1877 it has been providing a system of graded public examinations in instrumental and vocal performance, speech, drama and dance, culminating in diploma awards. The examination program covers a wide range of styles from Western classical to contemporary, jazz and popular, and fosters excellence in concentrating on the areas of performance, teaching, theory and composition. It operates in an international context of over 70 countries under the name of Trinity College London examinations and publishes new books and CD recordings of examination repertoire. In-service training programs are held for UK Music Services and schools. The newly-introduced ‘Sounds of Intent’ program aims to investigate and promote the musical development of children, young people and adults with learning difficulties. Diploma qualifications are: Associate Diploma (ATCL) in performance, instrumental and vocal teaching. Associate Diploma (AMusTCL) in theory. Licentiate Diploma (LTCL) in performance, instrumental and vocal teaching, classroom teaching. Licentiate Diploma (LMusTCL) in theory, composition. Fellowship Diploma (FTCL) in performance, music education. Fellowship Diploma (FMusTCL) in theory, composition.
