Institution Notes:
Formerly known as Thames Valley University, the name was changed in 2008 to The University of West London. The formerly independent London College of Music (founded in 1887) is housed at the University where it is currently known as the Faculty of the Arts. There is a performing arts clinic which runs programs for students and staff on coping with physical and psychological problems associated with stress in performing and teaching. A Department of Contemporary Piano concentrates on the study and performance of piano music of the last 30 years. Facilities include ten state-of-the-art sound studios, video studios, a TV studio, electronic keyboard studios, a multimedia studio and the nearby Ealing Film Studios (for students of composition or music technology) as well as a number of fine performing spaces. This is an All-Steinway School. There are other campuses at Slough, Acton and Reading. A Junior School offers Saturday morning tuition in practical and ensemble music, general musicianship, aural training, theory, music listening, voice production, computers in music and basic composition to young students aged 7 to 19. The London College runs a system of public examinations in music (classical, jazz, pop, rock, traditional music) and speech, culminating in the following external diplomas in performance or teaching: ALCM (Associate of the London College of Music). LLCM (Licentiate of the London College of Music). FLCM (Fellow of the London College of Music). AMusLCM (Associate in General Musicianship of the London College of Music). A theory qualification. LMusLCM (Licentiate in General Musicianship of the London College of Music). A theory qualification. It also offers the award of HonLCM (Honorary Member of the London College of Music), the only honorary award.
