Young Artists Program. One-year post-graduate course of advanced training for repetiteurs and for singers about to enter the opera profession. The studies consist of advanced musical coaching, study and interpretation of specific roles, deportment and stage presence, costume, movement, characterisation and languages (French, German, Italian). Repetiteurs have advanced training in learning to coach singers, conducting, repertoire, accompanying, playing piano reductions of orchestral accompaniments in vocal scores, in addition to a one-week residence with an opera company. Entry is by audition.
The Studio was founded in 1977 by the Arts Council of Great Britain as a link between the music colleges and the six main UK opera companies - English National Opera, Glyndebourne, Opera North, Royal Opera, Scottish Opera and Welsh National Opera. It is funded by the Arts Council, from awards and scholarships from charitable trusts, from the major opera companies and from individual and corporate donations. The board of management consists of the heads of Great Britain’s six main opera companies. The Studio provides a post-graduate master course for about twelve singers and four repetiteurs each year, and works in close co-operation with the principal opera companies. It is designed to add dramatic, language and interpretative skills to the students’ existing singing talents. Tuition fees are fully covered by grants and scholarships.
