The original Bhavan (‘Home of Indian Arts’) was founded in Mumbai, India in 1938 and has since spread widely. The English branch was established in 1972, and like its Indian home institution, is a secular non-political, non-commercial and non-profit-making institute specialising in the promotion of all aspects of Indian art and culture. Its programs operate during the evenings and at weekends. Outreach classes are also held at Wembley. The Institute holds concerts and festivals of Indian arts and publishes English language books on Indian culture. The library holds a collection of books on Indian art and music. Open classes in individual subjects may be taken as well as programs leading to the diplomas. Children may be accepted into its courses from age 8.
