Institution Notes:

The University of Leeds can trace its history back to 1874. It merged with University College Bretton Hall in 2001 and music studies have now been transferred to the Leeds campus. A new performance centre was opened in 2004. The Brotherton Library includes manuscripts and correspondence of Mendelssohn, manuscripts of Charles Dibdin and manuscripts and correspondence of the Novello music publishers. The music department owns a gamelan, a fine collection of historic and modern keyboard instruments and a wide range of orchestral and non-Western percussion instruments. It is an All-Steinway School. The music department houses the administrative centre of the National Association for Music Staff in Higher Education. There is an Interdisciplinary Centre for Scientific Research in Music with state-of-the-art electronic studio and laboratory resources. The Leeds University Centre for English Music is also housed at the Faculty. The university’s department of adult and continuing education holds various short courses in music for interested adults. An associate member of the Association Européenne des Conservatoires, Académies de Musique et Musikhochschulen.
