Institution Notes:
The University of Manitoba was founded in 1877, being Western Canada's first university. Currently there are several campuses throughout the city of Winnipeg. The Manitoba Institute for Music Technology provides training in music technology and encourages creative work and research in electroacoustic music. The University of Manitoba Opera Apprenticeship is a one-year program for advanced voice students. There is an extensive collection of classical and early instruments. The Eckhardt-Gramatté Music Library holds a collection of books on jazz, world music, and works of Canadian composers. The Division of Preparatory Studies provides training in such areas as performance, theory, Suzuki strings and piano, choir, instrumental ensembles, jazz improvisation, speech arts to children and interested adults. A network of Mennonite Colleges offers music programs which may be incorporated into degrees offered by the Universities of Manitoba and Winnipeg.
