Details:

Bachelor of Arts (=Licenciatura). Four years. Studies include performance (classical, popular, traditional), composition, choral and orchestral conducting, musicology, ethnomusicology.


Institution Notes:

The University of the Republic was founded in 1849 and is Uruguay's oldest public university. The School of Music opened in 1953 and gained its current name and status in 1986. Facilities include a well-equipped electronic music studio, an electroacoustic laboratory and the EUM library which has 180 musical instruments available to students, 25 active journal subscriptions and a collection of 20,500 scores and parts, including Uruguayan and Latin-American pieces. There are two chamber orchestras that give concerts throughout Uruguay, and a prestigious percussion group ‘Perceum' which has been frequently invited to international concerts and workshops. The School organises annual continuing education seminars and workshops which may be attended by everyone with no other pre-requisite than a small fee. A junior program caters for secondary students wishing to prepare for the professional course. There is a dance program. A branch of the music school operates in Salto.
