Details:

Individual tuition is offered in performance and music reading and writing. Optional free group courses include vocal and instrumental ensembles, percussion ensemble, theory class, collective singing. Workshops are offered in composition, harmony, audio, vocal interpretation, ’Murga’ choir and percussion, tango, ‘candombe’. There are programs for early childhood as well as workshops for children with disabilities and for senior citizens. Special one-year courses are available in Uruguayan popular rhythms, the training of community music educators, song composition.


Institution Notes:

Sometimes known as TUMP, the Uruguayan Popular Music Workshop was founded in 1984. Staffed by over 40 musicians and teachers it is a non-profit school, charging only a nominal fee. Apart from the regular music courses the Workshop participates in many community music promotion projects supported by the Municipality of Montevideo and UNICEF and works in musical expression and education through art with children in social need. The library houses an archive of press clippings on all music publications referring to Uruguay since 1987. TUMP publishes research reports, music education methods and songbooks.
