Founded in 1898, this private conservatorium is the oldest still active in Uruguay. There are more than 30 branches in provincial towns throughout Uruguay, the larger ones being in Salto, Paysandú and Rocha. As this is a private school it charges a small fee. Scholarships are available for needy students. The conservatorium organises a regular system of examinations in performance, theory and solfège in each of its branches, with examiners travelling from Montevideo for this purpose. The junior department offers music tuition to young people from the age of seven, and holds special courses for visually handicapped students. Musical Initiation courses for little children (four to five years) are offered and there are also drama and dance programs.
