Formerly known as the Hànôi National Conservatory of Music, the Vietnam National Academy of Music was established in 1956, being the first and largest centre for professional music training in Vietnam. It is dedicated to the conservation of Vietnamese classical music. The conservatory is organised into nine departments: Vietnamese Traditional Music, Piano, Musicology/Composition/Conducting, Stringed Instruments, Wind/Percussion Instruments, Vocal Music, Accordion/Guitar/Electric Keyboard, Music Knowledge, Basic Knowledge and Secondary School. Additionally there is an institute of music research that concentrates on Vietnamese traditional, Asian and Western classical music. The conservatory has a showroom of traditional instruments from 54 national ethnic minorities. There is an attached secondary school offering programs in performance, music history, composition and conducting in addition to general school subjects. Government scholarships are available. Ensembles include two symphony orchestras, an orchestra of traditional instruments, and chamber and light music groups. An instrument-making workshop on campus manufactures traditional Vietnamese instruments. There are co-operative agreements with a number of international conservatories. Language of Instruction is Vietnamese.
