Institution Notes:

The College of Music was founded in 1947 and the ethnomusicology program was inaugurated in 1989. It provides instrumental and vocal training and supporting programs in theory, aural training, traditional performance and popular music to interested members of the local community, organising Saturday music workshops and children's programs in music and dance. There is close collaboration with Africa University in the offer of the Bachelor's degree. In performance programs students may choose either Western or African traditional instruments. The College organises an ethno-women ensemble that prepares programs in instrumental and choral groups. Students may be trained to take 'O' and 'A' level music examinations as well as the music examinations run by the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music in the United Kingdom. In addition to the non-award programs there are classes for classical and contemporary European and Latin-American dance and a jazz course for adult beginners. With support from HIVOS (the Humanist Institute for Development Co-operation, a Dutch non-governmental organisation guided by humanist values), the College is hoping to refurbish and re-equip the music library and listening rooms, to upgrade the existing IT equipment and to purchase new computers and musical instruments following the disastrous fire of November 2007. Language of instruction is English.
