Institution Notes:

A state-supported historically black university that can trace its history back to 1851. It gained its current name and status in 1977. The library holds the Felix E Grant Jazz Archives, consisting of over 22,000 recordings, books, periodicals and tapes of interviews with the great artists of jazz - one of the most significant of its kind in the world. Single subjects may be taken by students and persons in the community not seeking a degree, provided they have the necessary pre-requisites. There is a Consortium of Universities of the Washington Metropolitan Area which extends the academic resources of students. Should a student wish to take a course not offered at the home campus a system of cross-registration enables the student to take the course at another Consortium institution, gaining credit at the home institution. The University of Maryland, College Park is also a member of the Consortium, being in close proximity to the Washington DC area.
