A private historically black university with federal government support. It was founded in 1866. The College of Fine Arts comprises departments of art, drama and music, and houses the Office of University Choirs and Bands. There are plans for a new building to house the College. The Moreland Spingarn Research Centre houses special collections of music, scores and recordings of music composed and performed by Afro-American musicians, including Paul Robeson and Pearl Bailey. The music department runs a string program in connection with the Kennedy Centre, with ad hoc teaching faculty from the National Symphony Orchestra. Member of the National Association of Schools of Music. There is a Consortium of Universities of the Washington Metropolitan Area which extends the academic resources of students. Should a student wish to take a course not offered at the home campus a system of cross-registration enables the student to take the course at another Consortium institution, gaining credit at the home institution. The University of Maryland, College Park is also a member of the Consortium, being in close proximity to the Washington DC area.
