Institution Notes:

A private Catholic university founded in 1887. The Benjamin T Rome School of Music is housed in Ward Hall, with access to some fine performance spaces. The School sees its main strengths as in performance, music history and liturgical music. Many graduate programs may be taken with Latin-American concentration. A Latin-American Centre for Graduate Studies in Music, founded in 1984, contains a collection of books, scores and recordings of Latin-American music. The School of Music is home to the Centre for Ward Method Studies - a system of vocal music education for children based partly on Gregorian chant. There is also an Institute of Sacred Music which includes liturgical, theological, classical and humanistic studies together with a comprehensive study of music. An Opera Institute for Young Singers between the ages of 15 and 18 is organised in the summer session of the Summer Opera Theatre Company. The Institute of Musical Arts offers piano tuition to selected students in the metropolitan area, giving practical teaching experience to students in the piano pedagogy program of the University. Member of the National Association of Schools of Music. There is a Consortium of Universities of the Washington Metropolitan Area which extends the academic resources of students. Should a student wish to take a course not offered at the home campus a system of cross-registration enables the student to take the course at another Consortium institution, gaining credit at the home institution. The University of Maryland, College Park is also a member of the Consortium, being in close proximity to the Washington DC area.
