A private university with links to the Methodist church. It can trace its history back to 1893. The Department of Performing Arts comprises divisions of music, theatre, music theatre, dance and arts management, with the music division being housed in the Katzen Art Center. Students may earn both undergraduate and graduate degrees through an accelerated bachelor/master program. The library holds the James Hix Collection of popular music and American musical theatre, the Joseph C Satterthwaite Collection of rare editions of nineteenth century opera scores and a significant collection of nineteenth century sheet music of American popular song as well as a large collection of phonograph records. Member of the National Association of Schools of Music. There is a Consortium of Universities of the Washington Metropolitan Area which extends the academic resources of students. Should a student wish to take a course not offered at the home campus a system of cross-registration enables the student to take the course at another Consortium institution, gaining credit at the home institution. The University of Maryland, College Park is also a member of the Consortium, being in close proximity to the Washington DC area.
