A state-supported university that can trace its history back to 1838. It gained its current name and status in 1968. The music department collaborates closely with other local performing arts organizations such as the Richmond Symphony Orchestra and the Virginia Opera. It sees its particular strengths as in jazz studies and music technology/electronic music. It has one of the largest classical guitar programs in the USA. There is a thriving opera program. The School of the Arts runs a Community School for the Performing Arts, offering instruction in music and theatre to interested persons in the local community.
