Institution Notes:
A private liberal arts college founded in 1800. The music department is housed in the Mahaney Center for the Arts and emphasises composition and performance, music history and ethnomusicology. It has access to some fine performing spaces. Participation in the College’s African Music and Dance Performance course allows students to gain credit towards their degree program. The Middlebury Afropop Band performs classic and contemporary popular music from all over the African continent. Facilities include a 51-rank Gress-Miles pipe organ, a carillon, a French double-manual harpsichord, a single-manual Italian harpsichord, and a three-rank portable pipe organ. The music library houses the Helen Hartness Flanders Ballad Collection - an archive of recordings and other materials on the English-language folk ballad.
