Institution Notes:

An independent university that can trace its roots back to 1891. In 1912 it became the Rice Institute, and gained its current name and status in 1960. The Shepherd School of Music, founded in 1975, is housed in the Alice Pratt Brown Hall, with fine performance spaces and well-equipped studios. The Margaret C Pack Language Institute for Singers offers support to the School's flourishing opera program. The University's Fondren Library holds thirteen individual leaves of rare 15th and 16th century original music manuscripts with portions of masses and prayers in Latin. The Michael P Hammond Preparatory Program offers private performance and chamber music instruction to children and interested members of the community as well as pre-school classes for the very young.
