The seminary was founded in 1908 and is supported by the Southern Baptist Convention. In addition to accreditation from national accrediting bodies the courses have been accredited by the Association of Theological Schools in the US and Canada. Attached to the Seminary is The College at South Western, a baccalaureate college which offers a concentration in music as part of the basic program in Bible and history of Western ideas. The Seminary’s Oratorio Chorus works with the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra. The Music Academy at the Seminary provides music tuition to children and adults from the local community, allowing the music major students to gain valuable experience in teaching practice. The library holds a collection of ethnic instruments from various countries, some decorative and some functional, as well as some working harmoniums. It houses the William J Reynolds Collection of books and scores of church music, the Stebbins Collection of hymnals, sacred song-books, histories, biographies and scrap-books related to American hymnody between the middle 18th century and mid-20th century, and a number of early American shape-note tune-books and hymnals from the period immediately following the Civil War. Member of the National Association of Schools of Music.
