Institution Notes:

A state university, opened in 1883. It is the largest institution of the University of Texas System. School of Music facilities include five concert and recital halls, numerous teaching studios, classrooms, rehearsal halls and 125 practice rooms. There are some 300 pianos, four harpsichords, two clavichords, a fortepiano and four organs. Facilities also include a group of state-of-the art electronic music studios and well-equipped recording studios, a new computer research laboratory and a film and media scoring studio. In addition to its professional programs in ethnomusicology the Graduate Division offers introductory courses with traditional music concentration to all students at the university. Other courses, including non-Western and traditional music, are offered through the Department of Anthropology. There are Centers for American Music, for Music Learning, for Sacred Music as well as the Butler Opera Center. The music program includes services relating to musicians' health and wellness. The School of Music organises two programs - String Project and Piano Project - for young children aged 4 and upward given weekly instruction from university undergraduate and graduate students.
