An historically black state-supported university founded in 1912. The music department houses the largest collection of basset horn music in the USA as well as a considerable collection of African-American music. It hosts the Historically Black Colleges and Universities annual piano competition, open to undergraduate students of any of the 105 historically black institutions in USA. The competition also issues an award for the best performance of a composition by a black composer. There is a Community Academy of Music & Arts that offers music and arts programs to children and interested members of the local community. Member of the National Association of Schools of Music.
