A state-supported university. Founded in 1911 as a teachers’ college, it gained its current name and status in 1965. It is located about a 30-minute drive south of Nashville, the Country Music centre of the world. The School of Music, an All-Steinway School, has access to several fine performance spaces as well as state-of-the-art recording studios, an electronic music lab, post-production studio and digital audio workstations. Ensembles include an opera company and workshop, an old-time music group, a salsa band and a steel drum ensemble. The Center for Popular Music is an archive and research centre devoted to the study of American popular music from the pre-revolutionary era to the present. It holds a large research library and archive. A Center for Chinese Music and Culture was inaugurated in 2016. It is the only one of its kind in North America and exists to ‘promote cultural diversity and mutual understanding through learning, scholarship, and service opportunities’. The School hosts four youth and community ensembles on a weekly basis and co-operative arrangements exist with professional music associations that stage regular events at the university. The national Orpheus Competition for solo voice is held in the School of Music, in partnership with the Middle Tennessee Choral Society. Member of the National Association of Schools of Music.
