Institution Notes:

A state university founded in 1912 and gained its current name and status in 1957. The music program has particular strengths in opera, jazz and recording technology. Ensembles include two orchestras, three bands, numerous chamber music groups, choral groups, jazz combos and a new music ensemble. Facilities include a state-of-the-art recording studio and an electronic music laboratory. The music library includes the Oettingen-Wallerstein collection of manuscripts and printed scores from court and monastery libraries of early 17th to late 19th century eastern Germany, as well as early 16th to late 18th century manuscripts of music in English libraries. The School of Music holds a summer institute of Orff Schulwerk and organises a Suzuki Institute. The Community Music School offers music tuition to children and interested members of the local community, including Suzuki programs in violin, viola, cello, harp, guitar, flute and piano, as well as a Kindermusik program and programs for senior citizens. There is a Preparatory Studies Division catering for gifted high school students. A second campus is in Jackson. Member of the National Association of Schools of Music.
