A state-supported university. Founded in 1862, it is the oldest institution of higher learning in South Dakota and is the flagship university for the state. The College of Fine Arts offers programs in art, music and theatre. The University's National Music Museum and Center for the Study of the History of Musical Instruments has a major collection of more than 15,000 musical instruments from all periods and from most ethnic groups of the world. There is a supporting library of books, music photographs, sound recordings and musical memorabilia. Regular concerts feature music performed on early instruments and in historically informed styles. The Center concentrates on teaching, performance and research. A preparatory department offers music performance tuition to young children and interested adults. Composition studies are also available. Member of the National Association of Schools of Music.
