Institution Notes:

A private university, the seventh oldest in America, being founded in 1764. Originally of Baptist heritage, it is now non-sectarian and is a member of the Ivy League. The music department has access to several fine performance spaces. There is an active opera workshop. The Orwig Music Library houses the Neiman Archive of Sound Recordings and the James T Koetting Ethnomusicology Archive of sound recordings, videos and unpublished field tape recordings, photographs and field notes. The University’s John Hay Library has a collection of over 500,000 pieces of American sheet music (vocal, nineteenth century piano music and British and American instrumental music) and the Harris Collection of American Poetry and Plays (including over 17,000 musical works from the seventeenth century to the present). The Department of Music owns sets of Ghanaian drums, bells and shakers as well as a Javanese gamelan.
