Institution Notes:

A state-supported university founded in 1787. The music department forms part of the Dietrich School of Arts and Sciences. Interdisciplinary study is encouraged in the graduate programs. The library holds the Theodore Finney Music Library, the Carnegie Music Library, collections of early American hymnal and tune books, performing materials of William Steinberg, former conductor of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, the Foster Hall Collection in the Stephen Foster Memorial and the archival material of Ethelbert Nevin. Facilities include two electroacoustic music studios as well as a collection of African, Chinese, Indian and Western musical instruments. Ensembles include African drumming, Chinese instruments, Javanese gamelan. The International Academy of Jazz Hall of Fame is housed in the William Pitt Union Building.
