Institution Notes:

An independent university that can trace its history back to 1870. The School of Music is housed in the Merriam Theater Building located on the Avenue of the Arts in downtown Philadelphia. The School emphasizes American music idioms such as jazz and contemporary music and there are more than 50 music ensembles currently in operation. This is the largest comprehensive education institution of its kind in USA, with programs in art, design, photography, graphic design, fine arts, crafts, dance, music, theatre arts and a college of media and communication. Music majors are encouraged to collaborate with dancers, choreographers, directors, actors and film makers within the college. Facilities include state-of-the-art recording and technology studios. There is a partnership with the Philadelphia Chamber Music Society to offer a series of public concerts. The University has a number of community outreach programs for young children and interested adults in the local community. Member of the National Association of Schools of Music.
