Institution Notes:

A private Ivy League university that can trace its history back to 1740. Areas of concentration in the music department are the history of music, music theory, anthropology of music and music as a liberal art. Studies in performance are not provided on campus; students wishing to take this option must obtain an approved instructor from the community at large. An agreement exists between Haverford, Swarthmore, and Bryn Mawr Colleges and the University of Pennsylvania whereby students may take individual courses at one of the other campuses for credit at the home institution. The Otto E Albrecht Music Library holds a significant collection of reference sources, critical editions and literature on music history and theory as well as some original autographed scores of Brahms, Sibelius and Bartok, a manuscript of early Baroque monody and two medieval theory treatises, an extensive collection of the letters of Saint-Saens, and the papers of Marian Anderson, Eugene Ormondy, Leopold Stokowski, the American Musicological Society and the Philadelphia Musical Fund Society. The Eugene Ormondy Listening Center houses some 38,000 sound recordings of Western music and art and traditional musics of the world.
