Institution Notes:

A private institution founded in 1924 aiming 'to train exceptionally gifted young musicians for careers as performing artists on the highest professional level'. Entry is by live audition. All students are awarded full scholarships; no tuition fees are payable. Voice applicants must be between the ages of 18 and 26. Students of piano, harpsichord, organ, composition and conducting receive a free loan of a Steinway piano for the duration of their enrolment. Singers with a limited background in music studies take a separate two-year course, replacing the required sequence of harmony, counterpoint and solfège. Age limits apply to all programs. Alexander technique and Feldenkrais are available to all. There is an active opera studio that produces three fully-staged performances per year. Students who have completed the academic course requirements may enrol free of charge at the University of Pennsylvania for academic courses not given at the Curtis Institute. The Institute offers music training to gifted pre-college students. The library holds over 75,000 volumes of music, scores and books and an extensive collection of recordings for performance and study. There is a vast orchestral library. Member of the National Association of Schools of Music.
