Institution Notes:
The Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ) can trace its history back to 1792 when it was known as the Royal Academy (Academy Real). It gained its current name and status in 1920, and so is the oldest in Brazil. The university houses the Centro de Pesquisas Folcloricas with a large collection of recordings of indigenous folk and urban music. The music library holds over 100,000 volumes and has the country’s largest collection of manuscripts of early Brazilian music dating from the sixteenth century. There is a fine organ and a museum of 90 antique instruments. The music department issues the Brazilian Journal of Music. A junior department provides early music training (iniciação musical) to children from the age of 6 until about age 16. Short extension courses are offered on such topics as composition, baroque and early music, troubadour music, drum-kit playing.
